Sugar and Its Skin Benefits

Sugar has a bad reputation when it comes to consumption: we are taught to eat sugar in moderation because of some of the issues it can cause to our bodies. But, what about using sugar on our skin?

Shockingly, sugar is super beneficial to our skin, when applied externally!

Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that gets down to the deepest layers of the skin, and breaks down the “glue” that binds skin cells together. This stimulates cell regeneration and encourages new skin cells, which prompts a more youthful appearance.

Sugar is a natural humectant, which means it draws moisture from the environment and locks it into the skin. By applying products with sugar or sugar derivatives, your skin stays moisturized and smooth!

Sugar Scrubs Are A Sweet Treat

As well as making an excellent exfoliant, sugar’s glycolic and alpha-hydroxy acid contents help to balance your skin's barrier, which leaves you with a naturally radiant glow!

The gentle abrasion of a sugar scrub removes damaged or dead skin cells and unclogs pores. Over time, this can impede the aging process and help the skin to retain a more youthful appearance, as well as prevent skin issues such as blackheads, blemishes, breakouts, and acne.

Choosing The Best Scrub For You

Sugar granules are typically less abrasive than salt or coffee grounds. Because of this, sugar scrubs are a great option for those of us who have sensitive skin, or are looking for an exfoliant to use on the face.  While sugar scrubs don’t have the mineral benefits of salt scrubs, sugar granules dissolve more easily in hot water. At 'Ili Kope, we have a variety of face and body scrubs to fit your needs.

Our famous Coco Scrub combines coffee grounds, salt, and coconut oil to smooth and rejuvenate your skin, while our popular Gold Sugar Scrub features sugar and coconut oil to hydrate and gently exfoliate. Our newest edition, the Vanilla Body Polish, is infused with our Vanilla Body Oil and has granulated sugar, which is perfect to use as a lip scrub and for those with super sensitive skin!

This is so interesting to read! Ever since I could remember I always thought that the consumption of sugary foods were bad for not only your diet but overall skin health. Once I’ve started trying the Ili Kope Gold Sugar scrub it changed my life! This is the only exfoliating cleansing scrub that I will use for my face, especially after having makeup on my face all day. I also use the newest Body Polish which has a more gentle scrub texture than the Gold sugar scrub. This one I like to use on my lips to plump my lips and moisturize.
